National ‘Walk Your Dog’ Week is October 1-7

I know that you love your ‘fur babies’. So, in celebration of the event, I am providing you with a specially curated list of great local dog parks here in the Hampton Roads area.

Chesapeake | Chesapeake City Park in Greenbrier now has two dog parks that separate large and small dogs. The area is located at the back of the park with a 6-foot fence and encompasses 1.5 acres. It includes a dog washing fountain. | Western Branch Dog Park is conveniently located, fully fenced with shade, water fountains, and benches. | The Deep Creek Dog Park is located next to the playground in Deep Creek Park. It features a large area for dogs, seasonal fountain, and benches. | To visit Chesapeake dog parks, you must purchase a membership and an animal license from the Chesapeake Visitor Center or the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism’s Administrative Office.

Hampton | Ridgeway Dog Bark Park allows dogs a chance to make friends and play off-leash in this fenced dog park.

Newport News | Fido Field is Newport News’ first dog park. It is located in the popular Riverview Farm Park, and features over an acre of open area. Fido Field is a terrific place for both you and your dog to exercise and socialize. A local tip: bring bug spray!

Norfolk | The Bea Arthur Dog Park is located on the Elizabeth River waterfront near the PETA building in downtown. It even has a ramp and plenty of room for running and swimming. | The Ghent Dog Park at Stockley Gardens is located in the fun and eclectic neighborhood of Ghent. The park is large enough to accommodate high energy pups breaking out into full runs! For longer walks, the streets of Ghent are tree-lined and there are dog bowls filled with water in front of most shops. | The Lafayette Dog Park garners a high Google rating with comments about friendly owners. It has benches and a beautiful view of the Lafayette River. | Here is a map of all Norfolk city dog parks.

Suffolk | Lake Meade Dog Park has loads of room for your dog to play. Amenities include separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, benches, picnic tables, water bowls, clean up bags, and a tree-shaded grassy area. Upon registering your dog with the city, you will receive an access code to open the park gates.

Virginia Beach | Bayville Farms Park is one of the best parks in the city. It features a fence, off-leash park with three separate areas — one for larger dogs, one for smaller dogs, and one which turf is being repaired; they rotate. What a unique and clever concept. Water is provided and refreshed daily. The park has plenty of shade. | Red Wing Dog Park has a one acre fenced area. | Woodstock Community Dog Park is a favorite with locals. It is a fenced, off leash park with a lovely water fountain. | Remember that dogs are welcome to enjoy all Virginia Beach public beaches and the boardwalk between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Dogs must be leashed on the Boardwalk.
